Instrument Repairs

Regular maintenance on all instruments is necessary if you wish to achieve optimal sound quality and performance. The ever changing Canadian climate can really take it's toll on our instruments.

Temperature changes and extreme levels of humidity dramatically affect the play-ability of your instrument. Most instruments can be adjusted and set up to fix these problems. Bring your instrument in for our Tech to have a look and give you details on what needs to be done with an estimate of the labour costs.

A message from Jon

As a child I grew up around a family of musicians that were playing and practicing for the local shows in town. My Grandfather's violin, my Father's Tenor sax, Uncle’s Alto sax, piano playing by my Aunt, and drums by another Uncle filled the old house. As I grew up I found guitar as my instrument of choice and over the years, being intrigued by other instruments like bass, trumpet, violin, drums, mandolin and banjo I took the opportunity to learn, play and dissect these instruments as well.

My philosophy is that every instrument deserves great attention to detail so it can play and sound its best. Every person plays differently and that needs to be taken into account when setting up an instrument. Details that includes using the correct strings for each player's unique style and technique.

I enjoy taking the time to connect with my customers so I can get to know each of them as much as possible and what they need. It is important to me that they are satisfied with the results of the repair. As I am a musician first, I understand what an instrument needs for performances, lessons or just playing around the campfire.

I am grateful to Mike, a local luthier in Hamilton for allowing me to spend time with him in his shop. For a year I was able to watch his approach to repairs and he steered me in the right direction when building my own guitar. My education background is in music, repairs, and have completed an Electronics Engineering course. I have been working with instruments electrical components for 30 years; some of this experience includes guitars, basses, amps, pedals, preamps, pickups, microphones and more.

I also believe that no instrument should go to the landfill. It can repaired, used for parts or become a piece of artwork. Don’t throw it away - bring it back to life! Not only can I restore your instrument, but I can also help you to explore your options so that you can customize and find your sound!

I have been setting up instruments for 20 years and now as a professional luthier for 15 years. Honesty, knowledge and communication are the backbone of my beliefs, so you can be confident that your instrument is in the right hands.

I truly love music and musical instruments. I can't wait to see you in the shop, have a look at what you're playing and to help you get your instrument in great condition for you to play your best!

- Jon Acheson, Luthier and Business Owner
